The Month of Ramadaan
The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is called Ramadhaan and it is the most meritorious month of the whole year. Since there are many specific rules peculiar to this month, we would like to deal with it’s characteristics in a rather detailed manner under different section.
THE PHILOSOPHY OF RAMADHAAN
The glorious Qur’aan has explicitly mentioned that the basic objective for which man is created by Allah is that he ‘worships’ Him: “And I did not create Jinn and human beings except that they should worship Me.” (Glorious Qur’aan 51:56)
The word used by the glorious Qur’aan for worship is ‘Ibaadah, which has a much wider sense than worship. In English, the word worship indicates some specific acts or rituals meant exclusively to show one’s reverence to his Creator. But the word ‘ibaadah is not restricted to such acts or rituals, rather, it embodies any act done in submission to Allah’s Commands and to seek His Pleasures. Therefore, many acts which seem to be mundane in nature are included in the word ‘ibaadah, like earning one’s livelihood through Halaal (permissible) means and in order to fulfil one’s obligations towards his dependants.
However, ‘ibaadah is of two kinds. One consists of acts that are meant exclusively to worship Allah, having no worldly objective, like Salaah, Fasting, etc. These are direct acts of ‘ibaadah, while the other kind of ‘ibaadah includes acts which are primarily mundane, but are converted into ‘ibaadah when performed in full conformity with Sharee’ah and with an intention to discharge one’s obligations. Therefore, these acts are treated as ‘ibaadah in an indirect manner. It is obvious that the direct acts of ‘ibaadah should be superior to the indirect ones.
Now, while prescribing very few acts of direct ‘ibaadah in one’s daily life, like the Salaah which is performed five times a day, Islaam has left its followers mostly with the indirect acts of ‘ibaadah like eating, drinking, earning livelihood and association with one’s wife, children, parents, relatives, friends and other human beings. But the primary nature of these acts being mundane, one becomes so absorbed in their worldly pleasures that their material aspects prevail their spiritual ones. Therefore, these acts have less spiritual strength than the direct acts of worship.
Since the direct acts of ‘ibaadah are very few in one’s daily life as compared to the indirect ones, his spiritual progress becomes slow vis-A-vis his material progress. The month of Ramadhaan has been designed to maintain a balance between material and spiritual aspects of the human life. This month is meant to maximise the direct acts of ‘ibaadah and to minimise the pure mundane activities, so that one may accelerate his spiritual progress to make up the distance and to repair the spiritual loss one may have suffered through his deep involvement in the mundane activities during the year. The days of Ramadhaan are designed for fasting, which is an act of ‘ibaadah for the whole day, and depriving oneself from food for many hours. This lessens the undesirable spiritual effects of the material pleasures. The nights of Ramadhaan, on the other hand, are spent in offering Taraaweeh, Tahajjud and Suhoor, thereby reducing one’s sleep much less than normal days. Moreover, apart from the prescribed acts of worship, one is supposed to offer as much optional (nafl) ‘ibaadah in this month as he can. In this way the level of one’s spiritual activities in this month is raised up much higher than in other days of the year.
This philosophy of Ramadhaan makes it clear that this month should be devoted to the direct acts of worship as far as possible. That is why the rewards of the virtuous acts in this month have been multiplied. This is to encourage the Muslims to carry out maximum possible acts of ‘ibaadah.
HOW TO SPEND RAMADHAAN
The month of Ramadhaan is the season of Divine Blessings. It is the month of purification and meant for annual renovation of the inner spiritual qualities. It is a golden opportunity for every Muslim to strengthen his Imaan, purify his heart and soul and remove the evil effects of the sins committed. This month invites a Muslim to minimise his mundane involvements and maximise the acts of worship. One should plan his schedule for this month beforehand, so as to spare maximum time for ‘ibaadah.
Below is a brief list of the acts which should be carried out in Ramadhaan with due care:
1. To offer every prayer with congregation in the Musjid.
2. To rise up a little earlier than the exact time of suhoor and to offer the Salaah of Tahajjud. There is no prescribed number of the Tahajjud prayer, yet, it is better to pray 8 rak’ats.
3. To offer the nafl (optional) prayers of Ishraaq (two rak’ats after sunrise), Dhuhaa (Four rak’ats which may be performed at anytime after Ishraaq before noon) and Awwaabeen (six rak’ats after Maghrib).
4. The recitation of the glorious Qur’aan. No specific limit is prescribed, but one should recite as much of it as he can.
5. To remember Allah frequently through different prophetic recitations, such as the following: Subhaana Allaah wa bihamdihi subhaana Allaahu al-Adheem, Laa hawla walaa quwwata illaa bi-llaahi al-aliyy al-adheem, subhaana Allaahu wa alhamdulillaah wa laa ilaaha illa Allaahu wa Allaahu Akbar, Astaghfiru-llaah lladhee laa ilaaha illaa huwa al-hayy al-qayyoom wa atoobu ilayhi, Allaahumma salli alaa muhammadin al-nabiyy al-ummiy wa-alaa aalihi wa-sallim tasleeman.
Apart from reciting these phrases, one hundred times each, at a particular time, they may also be continued frequently throughout the day, even if one is engaged in some light work, when walking and when in bed.
6. Prayers and supplications (du’aa): No particular prayer is prescribed. One can pray for everything he needs both in this world and in the Hereafter. However, the supplications of the noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam are so comprehensive that they encompass all that a Muslim can need in his life and after his death. It is therefore, much advisable to pray to Allah Almighty in words used by our noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
There are several books wherein these prophetic supplications have been compiled. Below are the names of two books which should be kept by every Muslim in his home and be used for praying daily: Al-Hisnul Haseen by Allaamah Al-Jazri and Munaajaat-e-Maqbool by Maulana Ashraf Ali Thaanvi
7. Giving Sadaqah (charity): Apart from paying Zakaat, which is obligatory, one should also spend optionally in Ramadhaan to the best of his ability. It is reported in authentic Ahaadeeth that the noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam used to pay special attention in Ramadhaan to look after the poor and help them financially. Therefore, a Muslim should give as much money in Sadaqah as he can afford.
WHAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN RAMADHAAN
All sinful acts should be avoided completely during the month of Ramadhaan. Although the sinful acts are totally prohibited in the Sharee’ah, whether in Ramadhaan or at any other time, but their prohibition becomes more severe in this month. It is evident that every Muslim avoids certain lawful acts, like eating and drinking during the fasts. If he continues to commit sins, it will be a mockery to avoid lawful things and yet be engaged in unlawful acts that were never allowed in the Sharee’ah. Thus, the abstinence from sins becomes all the more necessary in this month.
The following acts in particular, should be avoided totally:
1. Telling a lie.
2. Backbiting.
3. Quarrelling. The noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam has particularly forbidden from quarrelling during the fast. He has directed us that, if someone wants to quarrel in Ramadhaan, we should tell him that we are fasting, hence we are not prepared to indulge in any quarrel.
4. Eating unlawful things.
5. Earning through unlawful means.
6. Any act which may harm a person.
7. Burdening one’s servants or employees with a toilsome job that is beyond their ability, without providing them facilities to carry it out.
In short, one should try his best to refrain from all kinds of sins and protect his eyes, ears, tongue, and all other organs from indulging in any unlawful activity.
Once a Muslim spends the month of Ramadhaan in this way, he will insha’allah, find himself equipped with spiritual strength which will facilitate for him to conduct a good Islamic life in accordance with the Pleasure of Allah throughout the year.

All praises be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. He who revealed in His Glorious Quran, “Oh you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those who came before you that you may keep your duty to your Lord (having taqwa),” 2:185. And may the blessings and peace of Allah the Almighty be upon His last Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Ramadan is a sacred month wherein Almighty Allah is constantly testing His creation and giving humanity the opportunity to achieve His pleasure. One of the notable features of this blessed month, at a time when war has been declared upon Islam and the Muslims by America and Britain, is how the Imaan and understanding of the Muslims manifested itself upon the battlefield under the sincere Islamic leadership.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) passed through approximately nine Ramadan’s together after the Hijrah. They were filled with decisive events that took place in Ramadan and left us a shining example of sacrifice and submission to Allah the Most High in the cause of making His Word the highest.
In the first year after the Hijrah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib with thirty Muslim riders to Saif al Bahr to investigate three hundred riders from Quraish who had camped auspiciously in that area. The Muslims were about to engage the disbelievers, but they were separated by Majdy ibn Umar al-Juhany. The Hypocrites of Al-Madinah, hoping to oppose the unity of the Muslims, built their own masjid (called Masjid al-Dhirar). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered this masjid to be destroyed in Ramadan, after he returned from the ghazwah of Tabuk.
On the seventeenth of Ramadan, 2 A.H., Almighty Allah separated truth from falsehood at the Great Battle of Badr. He the All Powerful gave them a decisive victory on this day of Ramadan that would never to be forgotten.
“And indeed Allah assisted you at Badr when you were weak, so be observant to your duty to Allah so that you may be of the thankful ones. When you said to the believers ‘Does it not suffice you that your Lord should assist you with three thousand angels sent down.” Surat Aali Imran 3:123 & 124
The battle of Badr was the first of the great battles of Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left Medina with 313 men, 2 horses and 70 camels to go to Badr. On the 17th Ramadhan 2 A.H they defeated an army of 1000 men, 100 horses and 700 camels that left Makkah under the leadership of Abu Jahl to go to Badr.
During the Battle of Badr, Allah the Most Strong, inspired to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), “I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other in succession.” [TMQ 8:9]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rested after the strain of this revelation and then raised his head joyfully, crying, “O Abu Bakr, glad tidings are there for you, Allah’s victory has approached, by Allah, I can see Gabriel on his mare in the thick of a sandstorm.”
For us today, there are numerous ahadeeth which indicate similar victories to come not only over the Jews but also about Islam’s dominance extending over the entire world. We must make du’a for these victories, but not stop at that. For Islam also requires us to ensure that the actions of the Muslims collectively as an Ummah, through the establishment of sincere unified State, also reflect that noble purpose.
The battle of Badr strengthened the faith of the Muslims and was a decisive victory that shattered the forces of kufr and firmly established the new State in Medinah as a powerful spiritual, political and military force.
In 6 A.H., Zaid ibn Haritha was sent to Wadi al-Qura at the head of a detachment to confront Fatimah bint Rabiah, the queen of that area. Fatimah had previously attacked a caravan led by Zaid and had succeeded in plundering its wealth. She was known to be the most protected woman in Arabia, as she hung fifty swords of her close relatives in her home. Fatimah was equally renowned for showing open hostility to Islam. She was killed in a battle against the Muslims in the month of Ramadan.
By Ramadan of 8 A H., the treaty of Hudaibiyah had been broken and the Muslim armies had engaged the Byzantines in the North. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) felt the need to strike a fatal blow to disbelief in the Arabian Peninsula and conquered the city of Makkah in ramadhan. This was one of the most important dates in Islamic history for after it, Islam was firmly entrenched in the Arabian Peninsula. During the same month and year, after smashing the idols of Makkah, detachments were sent to the major centres of polytheism and al-Lat, Manat and Suwa, some of the greatest idols of Arabia, were destroyed.
Such was the month of Ramadan in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was a time of purification, enjoining the good, forbidding evil and striving hard with one’s life and wealth to make the word of Allah the highest and Islam the dominant Deen. After the death of the Prophet (saw), Muslims carried this Sunnah on and Allah the Majestic used the believers to affect the course of history. Ramadan continued then just as we see today in Central Asia and Afghanistan, to be a time of great trials and crucial events.
Ninety-two years after the Hijrah and in Ramadhan, Musa ibn Nusair the Umayyad governor of North Africa, and his courageous general Tariq ibn Ziyad succeeded in liberating whole of Spain, Sicily and part of France, beginning the Golden Age of Al-Andalus where Muslims ruled for over 700 years.
In the year 682 A.H., Salahuddin al-Ayyubi, after battling with the Crusaders for years, finally drove them out of Syria and liberated the whole of the occupied lands in the month of Ramadan. It was then that the Muslim world was destined to meet one of its greatest challenges.
In the seventh century A.H. the Mongols were sweeping across Asia destroying everything that lay in their path. Genghis Khan called himself “the scourge of God sent to punish humanity for their sins. “In 617 A.H. Samarkand, Ray, and Hamdan were put to the sword causing more than 700,000 people to be killed or made captive. In 656 A.H. Hulagu, the grandson of Genghis Khan continued this destruction. Even Baghdad, the leading city of the Muslim world, was sacked. Some estimates say that as many as 1,800,000 Muslims were killed in this awesome carnage. The Christians were asked to eat pork and drink wine openly while the surviving Muslims were forced to participate in drinking bouts. Wine was sprinkled in the masjids and no Azan (call to prayer) was allowed.
In the wake of such a horrible disaster and with the threat of the whole Muslim world being subjected to the same fate, Allah the Great One raised up from the Ummah, Saifuddin Qutz, who united the Muslim army and met the Mongols at Ain Jalut on 26th Ramadan, 648 A.H. Although they were under great pressure, the Muslims with the help of Allah, cunning strategy and unflinching bravery, crushed the Mongol army and reversed this tidal wave of horror. The whole of the world sighed in relief and stood in awe at the remarkable achievement of these noble sons of Islam.
This was the spirit of Ramadan that enabled our righteous forefathers to face seemingly impossible challenges. It was a time of intense activity, spending the day in the saddle and the night in prayer while calling upon Allah for His mercy and forgiveness.
Today, the Muslim world is faced with imperialist occupation, military aggression, widespread corruption and oppressive rulers. The War against Islam and the Muslims is in full swing. So arise O believers and walk in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the illustrious Sahabah, Tariq ibn Ziyad, Qutuz, Salahuddin and the other countless heroes of Islam. Strive to become the believers who are unafraid of the threats of the disbelievers, who are kind and humble to the believing people; Muslims whose fast is complete and not just a source of hunger and thirst.
May Allah the Most Glorious One make us that generation of Muslims who re-establish the promised Khilafah and carry Islam to the four corners of the globe, may Allah the Able give us the strength and success to lay the proper foundations of the Islamic rule for the coming generations and make us of those who carry out our Islam during Ramadan and after it.

The massive Taliban jailbreak has always been a question of the US military; just how did they do it? It was an operation that was so complex and great that it appeared to be something out of a Hollywood action film.
Here is a translation from the Taliban’s Monthly Al-Somood Magazine done by Dar al-Murabiteen; we have done some slight editing for ease of reading.
On Friday evening, exactly at 9:30 of 6/13/2008, 3 groups of Mujahideen moved under the leadership of the defiant Sheikh Maulvi Nazar Muhammad Faiaaz, may Allah preserve him, to execute the plan of conquering the Central Kandahar prison, which lies in the Western area of the city of Kandahar in the area of Sarboza.
Reasons and motives for the operation
The heroic Mujahideen moved to perform the plan of this attack after around 400 arrested Mujahideen went on a hunger strike for 2 weeks due to the maltreatment they received from the jailers, in the Central Kandahar prison.
The puppet Karzai government had earlier sent, on 5/13/2008, a special committee to investigate and solve the problem of the detainees who had stitched their mouths as an apparent way of showing their hunger strike due to the maltreatment they received from the jailers.
The members of the committee told the officials in the Karzai government concerning the state of the detainees in the Kandahar prison and their pitiful condition. However they failed to do anything to address the complaints of the transgressed detainees and no decision that would benefit the detainees and would solve their problem was made. The Mujahideen, however, who were watching the situation of their detained brothers with utmost seriousness and were looking for a way of releasing their brothers from the hands of the transgressors started preparing for the operation of the conquest of the Kandahar prison and Allah the Almighty willed to bless this successful military planning and the detained Mujahideen with sincerity and escape from the hands of the transgressors.
Carrying out the operation
After the heroic Mujahideen decided to perform the operation on the Central building of the prison, they distributed the tasks on 3 attacking units, each one consisting of around 30 Mujahideen.
And every unit started carrying out its job as follows:
Group 1- It succeeded in blocking the way that led to the Central prisons from the base of the city in the area of Dand.
Group 2- It succeeded in closing the road to the prison from the area of Herat to the area of Baghi Bil.
And after the two groups succeeded in closing down the ways that led to the prison, the third group started raiding the prison by blowing a tank filled with explosive materials at the door leading to the prison that led to the complete destruction of the fore section of the prison. This was followed by a successful attack on the four towers that were being used by the guards of the prison. The Mujahideen succeeded, by the grace of Allah, to finish them off within 15 minutes. The group was entrusted with the releasing of the prisoners, breaking the doors and then breaking into the prisons.
The Mujahideen were able to, by the grace and bounty of Allah, to release all the detained Mujahideen who numbered around 450 and then they started releasing the remaining prisoners who were detained by the Karzai administration under the accusation of belonging to the Mujahideen, numbering around 650, who had spent several years in the prison without anyone knowing their fate.
Brother ‘Abdullah, one of the participants in the operation says that when he entered the prisons and broke the doors and was able to release all the detainees present in them, he entered into a special section inside the prison and found a number of detainees whose age exceeded 60. He asked them to leave the prison but they refused to go because of their incapability of moving and walking due to their paralysis and old age.
And after removing the prisoners from the prison, the Mujahideen divided all the detainees into a number of groups and every section’s responsibility was given to one of the Mujahideen appointed by Sheikh Maulvi Nazar Muhammad Faiaaz, may Allah preserve him, so that the prisoners reach a safe area. Therefore they took all the detainees first to Nakhoni and Zila Khan that lies within the control of the Mujahideen in the district of Panjwai and then they put them in the vehicles of the Mujahideen and delivered them to safe areas. The total number of detainees was around 1100 from the Mujahideen and others.
Reaction of the foreign and puppet forces
After listening to a frightful explosion that shook the city of Kandahar, the foreign forces present in the Kandahar airport and other areas in the city came towards the Kandahar prison but the ambushes of the Mujahideen were successful in combating the movements of these forces.
The Mujahideen used new techniques against the enemies whereof they placed balloons filled with gases on the way towards the prison. When the police and the foreign forces saw these balloons they retreated fearing that these balloons would blow up on them.
The strange thing about the matter is that the balloons placed on the road were simple balloons empty of even natural gas.
The foreign forces declared this as a very successful operation, whereof Brank Manoha, the official spokesman of the foreign forces, said in this regard – ‘We have to admit this: these people have done a very accurate job in this context.’
And the defense minister of Canada stated clearing that extra Canadian forces have spread throughout the city to prevent such operations to occur again, while the foreign forces and other world media sources mentioned the operation of the conquest of the Kandahar prison as a complex successful operation performed almost in the pattern of the Hollywood films.
The puppet Karzai administration fired many of the prominent military and administrative personalities in the city of Kandahar due to this operation, and at their head Sayed Agha Thaqib, the Chief of the Kandahar police, the Chief of the national and regional security, and the Chief of the Criminal section of the Western region.
The Karzai administration not only fired these people from their jobs but instead, gave them up to the General prosecutor’s office to carry out more investigations for the ‘Security lapse’, as they described it.
The harvest of the operation
The heroic Mujahideen harvested through performing this successful operation all the employees inside the prison, numbering around 35, between guards and employees. They were also able to, by the grace of Allah, rescue 450 detained Mujahideen, some of who where amongst the prominent military leadership positions at the level of Kandahar and the neighboring provinces that were leading strong military activities inside Kandahar city and around it, in preparing and planning martyrdom and ambush operations on the bases of foreign and puppet forces.
The effect of the operation on the psychology of the enemies
The performance of this operation had a heavy negative effect on the psychic of the enemy forces both foreign and interior, and their spirits were completely crushed after the Mujahideen were able to perform an operation in such an accurate technical manner that did not result in any casualty in the ranks of the Mujahideen. On the contrary, it had a positive effect on the Mujahideen and it raised their spirits due to the successful rescue of their brothers from the hands of the transgressors and they started performing comprehensive operations on the foreign and interior forces in different parts of Afghanistan especially on the convoys of the foreign forces that passed by the main roads from Kabul to the city of Heart.
The number of attacks that the Mujahideen performed on the convoys of the foreign forces on a single day was more than 25 (attacks) that resulted in the destruction and torching of 100’s of military vehicles and torching a large number of aid vehicles along with the death of 10’s of the foreign forces and their puppet helpers.
We will specify here the mention of torching and destruction of a convoy of aid vehicles that the Mujahideen performed in the Maidan Wardek province at a distance of 45km from the capital Kabul, burning more than 35 vehicles loaded with American aids and the death of many soldiers that accompanied it.
The wave of offensive operations on the bases and convoys of the foreign forces have also increased in Ghazni, Paktika, Paktia and Farrah resulting in the destruction of several foreign forces and their counterparts. This led to the admittance of the enemy of a large number of casualties, both human and material in the month of July in which the Kandahar operation took place.
And as per the report of CNN, the month of July marked the greatest loss of soldiers to the foreign forces since the beginning of the crusade wars in Afghanistan in 2001, the matter that makes the harvest of this month at 47 deaths from amongst the foreign forces alone. From amongst the dead this month were 21 American soldiers, 15 British soldiers, 5 Canadian soldiers and one from Poland, Romania and Majar and 3 others from other Kafir races of the West.
The Major General Jeffrey Shalomar, a high official in the American army, has warned about the increase and frequency of the attacks that target the foreign forces in Afghanistan.
Jeffrey also added that the current state witnesses the peak of attacks against the foreign forces, something that testifies to the toppling of the security condition in Afghanistan when compared to the recession of the average of attacks in Iraq.
The main pointer to the widening and rise in the military operations against the invaders is the interest and approach of the Afghani people on the pits of fighting and the toppling of the spirits of the occupiers in Afghanistan.
Summary
Performing the operations of the conquest of the Kandahar prison, and the operation of the Mujahideen on the celebration ceremony in Kabul, and the operation of the Serena Hotel at a few meters from the democratic Presidential castle in the Afghani capital and the death and injury of 100’s of occupation forces and the downing of several helicopters in a single month are considered a back-breaker for the skeleton of the Crusade alliance, concerning the planning of which the Mujahideen had formerly warned the oppressive forces in Afghanistan.
And the series of these blessed operations will continue until the oppressive Kafir forces are forced to run from the land of the Muslim Afghanistan.
And Afghanistan remains a pure Islamic State that bows only to the rule of Allah the Almighty, by the will of Allah.

There are two major points in this short video that Michael makes:
1. Shaykh Usaamah was never a “creation” or “agent” of the Americans; in fact, he was (and is) against the Americans.
2. The Afghans won the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets; Michael even says, “Allah delivered to Muslim people a victory over one of the world’s two greatest superpowers.”
Now that’s a reality check for the Munaafiqeen who say the opposite regarding these two points.

This is some fascinating news coming out of the Guardian. Although we are not entirely surprised by this news, it does however confirm our belief that the UK Government in general and the BBC in specific, deliberately lie in order to taint the image of the vanguard of Islaam. They seek to destroy the hope of Islaam’s rise to power by cowardly attacking the efforts of the Mujaahideen. Many times, we have seen those lies exposed whenever they tried announcing the death or capture or “fake identity” of Shaykh Abu ‘Umar al-Baghdadi - may Allah protect him. This goes to show just how desperate the enemies of Allah are.
Revealed: Britain’s secret propaganda war against al-Qaida
BBC and website forums targeted by Home Office unit
A Whitehall counter-terrorism unit is targeting the BBC and other media organisations as part of a new global propaganda push designed to “taint the al-Qaida brand”, according to a secret Home Office paper seen by the Guardian.
The document also shows that Whitehall counter-terrorism experts intend to exploit new media websites and outlets with a proposal to “channel messages through volunteers in internet forums” as part of their campaign.
Through my experience in the many Islaamic forums, it’s not hard to believe in this; in fact, these Munaafiqeen and Kuffaar are active on the Islaamic forums as we speak.
So a word of warning to all those brothers and sisters on the Islaamic forums:
By attacking the Mujaahideen in general, and Tandheem al-Qaa’idah in particular, you are helping the efforts of the Government that is fighting Islaam with all of their might and power whether you like it or not. Naturally, if we do see something wrong, our obligation as Muslims is to correct these things. But there is always a time and place to do it and there’s always a method on how to do it. Some brothers, for some reason, feel the need to have their voices heard loud and clear when talking against the Mujaahideen as opposed to privately discussing the matter; they don’t realize that it’s helping Allah’s enemies and it’s decreasing the love, spirit and support of the Global Jihaad. Sure, the Mujaahideen are not perfect and they never claimed to be. Sure, they have mistakes and they have admitted it like sincere and humble human beings. But to go all out against our brothers that are fighting to uplift the word of Allah against the word of Democracy and Kufr, then this is similar to showing Bara’ah to the Mujaahideen. After Allah, and His Messenger, who do we have? The Governments? Their Armies? The Politicians? The Imaam’s who are too scared to speak the truth?!
Shaykh Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said after Allah and His Messenger, you only have the Mujaahideen. So give them the respect they deserve as Allah has given them by preferring them over everyone else.
Attacking the Mujaahideen at a time when they are not doing so well is extremely unapprioriate; it helps the tide of Democracy and disbelief against Islaam and Imaan. Unfortuantely, the fools at MuslimMatters.org don’t understand that since they live in an imaginary bubble. May Allah save us and the Ummah from their likes and their Scholars.
If you do have a criticism against the Mujaahideen, then we ask you - and they ask you - to deliver the criticism in the appropriate place and time. When a Father has lost his job, and his family is starving, and the Government is starting to take away his property due to a lack of paying taxes - and the Father is striving and struggling to get a job and he’s crying night after night to Allah - the last thing he needs to hear is for an “armchair general” or a “smart guy” to tell him that he’s doing a lousy job. And he certainly doesn’t need this fool to blabber about it to everyone on some online forum where thousands upon thousands of other people will read it. So fear Allah my brothers and sisters, and be sensitive regarding these issues.
If you cannot deliver the criticism to the appropriate time and place, then fear Allah in your ownselves and stay quiet, if their is a seed of Imaan in your heart that believes in Allah and the Last Day. Don’t start these long-winded debates on the forums where you end up just insulting each other; what benefit is there in such things when those whom you are talking about (or attacking) are not even reading your words so that they can re-consider?
The strategy is being conducted by the research, information and communication unit, [RICU] which was set up last year by the then home secretary, John Reid, to counter al-Qaida propaganda at home and overseas. It is staffed by officials from several government departments.
The report, headed, Challenging violent extremist ideology through communications, says: “We are pushing this material to UK media channels, eg, a BBC radio programme exposing tensions between AQ leadership and supporters. And a restricted working group will communicate niche messages through media and non-media.”
The disclosure that a Whitehall counter-terrorism propaganda operation is promoting material to the BBC and other media will raise fresh concerns about official news management in a highly sensitive area.
The government campaign is based upon the premise that al-Qaida is waning worldwide and can appear vulnerable on issues such as declining popularity; its rejection by credible figures, especially religious ones, and details of atrocities.
The Whitehall propaganda unit is collecting material to target these vulnerabilities under three themes. They are that al-Qaida is losing support; “they are not heroes and don’t have answers; and that they harm you, your country and your livelihood”.
This is sneaky propaganda from the accursed Shaytaan. Shaytaan will let you live a good life just as the Government will let you live a good life. But to them, the “good life” is everything materialistic and has nothing to do with Imaan and Yaqeen. Anyone who has Imaan and Yaqeen would prefer a life of zuhd over a life of flashy materialism. Anyone who has Imaan and Yaqeen would prefer to fight under the Mujaahideen than to fight under the Kuffaar.
The Mujaahideen do have answers of course, and they don’t intend to harm everyone as the Government and BBC wants you to believe.
The RICU guidance, dated July 21 2008, says that the material is primarily aimed at “overseas communicators” in embassies and consulates around the world, confirming the global scale of the Whitehall counter-terrorist propaganda effort now underway.
But it also says that other partners should be encouraged to integrate this work into their communications at home as well: “It is aimed primarily (but not exclusively) at those working with overseas influencers and opinion formers.”
The first dossier of material being despatched to diplomatic posts worldwide cites condemnation of al-Qaida from Sayyid Imam al-Sharif aka Dr Fadi, a former leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and Salman Abu-Awdah, a leading Saudi scholar who has published an open letter to Osama bin Laden calling al-Qaida’s aims illegitimate and immoral. It notes that groups like Hamas and Hezbollah are now keen to distance themselves from al-Qaida.
One of the evil plans of the Kuffaar is to totally discredit the opinions and words of the Mujaahideen. For instance, Sayyid Imaam al-Shareef made his condemnation (the recent one which they are referring to) in the Egyptian Jail; he supposedly faxed his condemnation paper from prison. Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri replied to this incident, “is the fax machine connected to the same line as the electrical chair?” And it may sound funny but the Egyptian Government is known for extreme torture. It is an extremely important point that is made but it is a point which the Kuffaar discredit in order to further push their agenda that the Mujaahideen are “losing support.”
As for Shaykh Salman’s letter to Shaykh Usaamah, then that was not wise on his behalf. If he was forced by the Government, then it’s not surprising. You can read the refutation of that letter here.
In a section headed “AQ has suffered military defeat in …” it adds “use advisedly - avoid suggesting that AQ is no longer a threat. We are not claiming victory over AQ. We are stressing their declining support”.
In other words, they don’t want to lie too much so that their backs are exposed; but Alhamdullilaah, they have been exposed.
The dossier says that al-Qaida has been definitively expelled from large areas of Iraq and has lost ground in Afghanistan. It quotes CIA director Michael Hayden’s claim in May that al-Qaida had been essentially defeated in Iraq and Saudi Arabia and was now “on the defensive throughout much of the rest of the world,” but describes this as a “strikingly upbeat assessment of the organisation”.
It highlights the fact that Mohammed Hamid, who was convicted in February for recruiting and radicalising young men to fight against the west, was a former crack addict.
And ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab - may Allah be pleased with him - was a former heavy alcoholic drinker. Then he later became one of the greatest Caliphs of Islaam. Thus, the Kuffaar try to rush to every mistake and sin of the individual in order to discredit that person and making his mistakes and sins appear as his methodology. They even tried to discredit the status of Shaykh Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi by stating that he was an alcoholic and had a tatoo! It’s as if these Kuffaar have no concept of Muslims having the ability to repent from their past misdeeds! And the so-called Salafi’s are a perfect example of this ludicrious behavior adopted from the Kuffaar. Allahul Musta’aan.
So the Kuffaar take 9/11 and they think the Mujaahideen will do this all the time and that they don’t follow any rules of the Jihaad and that they will freely slaughter women and children, when this is clearly not the case when al-Qaa’idah has already stated but the media purposely hides it from the public. Regarding this, Shaykh Usaamah said in the Tayseer ‘Alouni interview of 2001,
But I mention that there are also other events that took place, bigger, greater and more dangerous than the collapse of the towers. It is that this Western civilization, which is backed by America, has lots its values and appeal [qiyamuhaa]. The immense materialistic towers were destroyed, which preach Freedom, and Human Rights, and Equality. It became a total mockery [hadhaa'an manthuura] and that clearly appeared when the US government interfered and banned the media outlets from airing our words which don’t exceed a few minutes, because they felt that the truth started to appear to the American people, and that we truly aren’t terrorists by the definition they want, but because we are being violated in Palestine, in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Sudan, in Somalia, in Kashmir, in the Philippines and in every place, and that this is a reaction from the young men of this nation [ummah] against the violations by the British Government.
The article goes on,
The document also notes that al-Qaida has to “feed its new franchises with propaganda to keep the ‘brand’ alive at all costs”. It says that it is focused on Palestine - to the discomfort of the Palestinians - because it has failed in Iraq and is now pronouncing on issues as diverse as Egyptian trade unions and climate change in a desperate attempt to remain relevant.
What the Kuffaar hide from you and me is that al-Qaa’idah has been focusing on Palestine ever since its creation; just look at Shaykh Usaamah’s Declaration of War in 1998 or his interview with Tayseer ‘Alouni in 2001. Even Tayseer ‘Alouni asked him,
But Shaykh, from what I see from your answers, you say that always about Palestine and about the Palestinian issue. So let me ask you the question, your latest statements, or precisely a statement that appeared a few years ago that preached killing Jews and Crusaders, and we remember that the title had between quotes a famous hadeeth, “Expel the mushrikeen (polytheists) from the Arabian peninsula”[narrated by al-Bukhaari (2932) and Muslim (3089)], you concentrated on the expulsion of the Americans from the Arabian peninsula. So in your latest speeches we see a decrease in that. You have put forth the Palestinian issue, or like you call it the Aqsa issue, to the forefront, and you moved the issue of the Haramain to a secondary spot so to speak. So what is your opinion or argument on this matter?
And Shaykh Usaamah replied,
I say that with no doubt jihaad is mandatory on all Muslims [fard `ayn] to free the Aqsa, or to save the weak in Palestine and in Lebanon and in Iraq and in all Islamic lands, and there is no doubt that freeing the Arabian peninsula from the polytheists [mushrikeen] is also mandatory on all Muslims [fard `ayn].
And concerning the talk that Usamah has put the Palestinian issue to the forefront, that is not true. “Al-`Abd al-Faqir” has a speech from the year 1407H (1986AD) that incites Muslims to boycott American products, and I used to say that the Americans take our money and give it to the Jews so they can kill our children with it in Palestine. That is mandatory on all Muslims [fard `ayn] and this is mandatory on all Muslims [fard `ayn], and there are a lot of mandatory things [furood a`yaan] in jihaad, like Kashmir amongst others, and from the battle front that was created a few years ago, the title of which was called: “The Islamic Front of Jihaad Against the Jews and Crusaders” [al-Jabha al-Islaamiyya lil-Jihaad Dudda al-Yahood wal-Saliibiyeen].
So our mention of those two issues or two topics, is of utmost importance. So some of the events of recent times might push one issue over the other, so we move towards that direction, without ignoring the other.
Palestine has always been the major focus of al-Qaa’idah; it’s just that when certain events occur or overlap, they bring up the Palestinian issue in order to refresh the minds of the Muslims of their obligation.
The “material” is a mixture of recent news reports and articles from Arabic, Middle Eastern and North African news sources illustrating the theme of “AQ is in decline” as well as articles from the New York Times, the Observer, Newsweek and British and American websites.
The RICU guidance note says the dossier has been drafted with support from Whitehall press officers “on how best to tailor such material for media engagements, presenting information to ministers, or to other stakeholders. It is in a separate, unclassified format to make it the sort of product that a minister or a press officer could use before an interview; or that could be given as a crib sheet for trusted contacts,” says the classified document.
Now here is something which one must consider regarding the failure of this “war on terrorism” from the perspective of the Mujaahideen. One of the most prolific and productive writers on al-Ekhlaas, Asad al-Jihaad 2 (some suggest that he might actually be an al-Qaa’idah commander - Wallahu ‘Alam), had come out with an analysis of some of al-Qaa’idah’s successes; and all the success belongs to Allah alone.
He said that the battle in Tora Bora made it seem as if al-Qaa’idah was on the brink of total destruction. Many thought the same with the Taliban. It appeared that they were cornered and isolated and the bombs were raining on them for long periods of time, killing them one by one. However, he argued, “In only seven years, they [al-Qaa'idah] were able to triumph over the world alliance against them.” And so their organization in Afghanistan opened a franchise in ‘Iraaq, Egypt, North Africa, Pakistan, and now Somalia (and they are in other places as well such as the Caucuses, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Yemen etc.). He also stated that the Palestinian Territories are merely in need of a “spark” for al-Qaa’idah to show its presence there.
And their influence is spreading far and wide across the globe. To say that they are now losing shows the severity of the disbelievers in grasping for breath in this globalized world where the Mujaahideen have a firm grip around their neck. Killing a few of their leaders has proven to do absolutely nothing to their activities since they firmly believe that Jihaad solely depends on Allah alone and not His creation; and no one can extinguish the kindled fire in the heart of the true believer except if Allah wills. So propaganda, lies and deceit doesn’t hurt the vanguard of Islaam.
Clint Van Zandt, a former Counter-Terrorism expert for the FBI between 1970 - 1995, said:
“Al-Qaa’idah is an Army without Uniforms. Al-Qaa’idah is an Army even without a common language. There’s a common philosophy, a common belief system, that may bind the various cell groups of al-Qaa’idah together from all over the world. From a law inforcement perspective, this is probably the biggest challenge that has been faced in the last 200 years.”
Some of the other successes which Asad al-Jihad 2 notes is as follows:
- Many United States government officials were forced to leave their posts after their failure to defeat al-Qaa’idah.
- American historians have claimed that President Bush has been the worst president in American history.
- Al-Qaa’idah weakened the most powerful country on Earth in “the Badr of the [21st] century.”
- Al-Qaa’idah brought down the British government after its 7 July 2005 attacks.
- Al-Qaa’idah broke the Musharraf government after it attacked Islam.

The following is taken from Imaam Anwar’s blog:
Question:
Salam Alakum. What I understand from your lectures is that you believe the
method to re-establish Khilafah is through Jihad. Can you respond to this?
“Another view that is being addressed to the Ummah is the concept of fighting
the rulers and that through military struggle Islam will return to the world
stage. Again this is based upon a particular Hadith. It has been narrated from
many sources including Imam Muslim that the Prophet (saw) said, .Do not
challenge the people of authority unless you see explicit Kufr of which you have
clear proof from Allah(from Islam).. Ibn Kathir in his Tafseer states that if
the Khaleefah reverts to the rule of disbelief, he would be fought until he
returned to the implementation of Islam and the Shari’ah.
Ibn Hajr in his Fateh al-Bari also states that if he becomes a Kafir, or
changes the Shari.ah he should be fought and removed. This view is also
mentioned in Nayl al-Awtar and supported by Imam Shawkani. That is, if the ruler
rules by other than the Shari’ah he is fought until he either repents or is
removed. However that is the only situation that it applies to i.e. the ruling
of a Khaleefah who resorts to the Kufr ruling and disobedience to Allah. It does
not relate to the Khaleefah becoming tyrannical and also does not relate to his
personality becoming corrupt. In which case obedience to him is binding and the
Muslims should still pray behind him and fight Jihad behind him.
However, these Ahadith are not connected to the current situation. They are all
connected to revolt and rising against the Khaleefah and are titled under the
subject of .Khurooj min al Khaleefah. i.e. rising against the authority of a
Khaleefah or an Imam.
The current situation is not that of the Khulafaa’ who used to rule by Islam
and then turned away from Islam. The current problem is also not merely related
to removing a ruler by killing him. Rather, entire systems of Kufr have been
implemented over Muslims for over 76 years, none of the rulers have ever ruled
by the Shari.ah and none of them are Khulafaa’ within a Khilafah. The systems
that they are applying are either monarchies or Capitalistic with some sort of
democratic framework. Hence, the reality isn.t that of removing a bad Khaleefah
within an Islamic State. The reality is of uprooting an entire Kufr system,
including it.s ruler, to again establish Dar ul-Islam. The current rulers are
not comparable in any way to Khulafaa’ who have introduced one Kufr law into the
Khilafah. Hence these Ahadith, which have always been understood in the context
of Dar ul-Islam i.e. where Islam is implemented and the Muslims possess the
security, do not apply upon the current situation. The reality which they
address is that of removing a Khaleefah who rules with Kufr within the Islamic
State, not that of uprooting an entire Kufr system merely by fighting and
killing the ruler of that system.
The only situation that is comparable from the evidences is the establishment
of the Islamic State for the very first time by the Prophet(saw) and the
struggle which he (saw) went through in order to establish this State and change
Dar ul-Kufr to Dar ul-Islam. This is the struggle which he (saw) referred to in
the Hadith of Hamza and as is illustrated in the Books of Sunnah and Seerah. As
that is the only instance in which a complete system of Kufr existed and was
changed to a complete system of Islam. So the matter is regarding the changing
of a system, not merely a ruler. The Ahadith of fighting, apply to changing a
ruler i.e. a Khaleefah who has gone astray not a system, only the struggle of
the Prophet (saw) in Makkah applies to the changing of a system. So military
struggle is not the method of re-establishing the Khilafah.”
- Also, can you give me your views on Hizb ut-Tahrir. JazakAllah Khair. Salam
Alakum.
Answer:
Most Islamic groups that were founded after the fall of the khilafa recognize the importance of re-establishing al khilafa again. There was a time during the decades of the eighties and nineties when the Salafi’s, Ikhwaan, Jamaat Islami, HT, Jihad groups and even some of the sufi’s talked about khilafah. Since then and because of the fact that the West has made it clear that it doesn’t like that idea and would not tolerate it, some groups have backed off completely from any talk of khilafah while others toned it down. Only a few remained steadfast in their call to establish the Islamic system again.
The proposed methods that Islamic groups presented for re-establishing al Khilafah are:
1. Through tarbiyyah and then somehow when our condition changes the khilafa will be re-established again. While others say we will do tarbiyyah until the ummah is ready and then we will fight the enemies of Allah.
2. By reaching to power through participating in the democratic system.
3. The HT method of raising the awareness of the ummah of the importance of khilafa, educating the Muslims on politics, and searching for nusrah.
4. Fighting in path of Allah in order to establish the religion of Allah.
The proponents of the first method have never given the ummah any benchmark to when we have done sufficient tarbiyyah to move on to the stage of implementation and therefore will remain in a perpetual state of tarbiyyah while negating the duty of Jihad.
They also miss the point that tarbiyyah is within one generation and not multigenerational. Meaning the change that Rasulullah brought which started with dawa and ended with jihad was within the lifetime of one generation. It all happened within 23 years. Every other successful change in the ummah occurred within one generation. History is a testimony to this.
The promoters of change by participation in democratic elections started out by stating that democracy is kufr and we do not believe in it but we are using it as a vehicle to reach to power and after we reach to power we will implement Islam. This is what I heard from every single leading member of Ikhwaan in the late eighties and early nineties. I clearly remember the public discussions that were held on this issue because the Salafi’s back then were very much against Ikhwaan on this point. I also remember clearly the private discussion I had with some of the shuyukh of ikhwaan who would reiterate the same point again and again: Democracy is un-Islamic and we are participating in elections but our intentions are to change the system from within.
There are three problems with this method:
First: It is a deception and a lie to use democracy and claim to be adherents to the democratic system but not believe in it. Now deception is acceptable against the enemy if the Muslims are in a state of war with the them. The problem is that the particular groups that are involved in the democratic process do not believe that they are in a state of war with the disbelievers but believe that there is a covenant between the Muslims and the disbelievers. So if we are in a covenant with the disbelievers then it is not allowed to use deception against them and it is not allowed to lie to them. That’s the first problem.
The next problem is that when you repeat a lie long enough you end up believing it. For those who knew these groups from the eighties it is strange for them to see how much they have changed over time. Now they are saying and I have heard this more than once from their prominent members that now we genuinely do believe in the democratic system. We believe in the ballot not bullet. And if the ballot decides that a secular or disbelieving party wins we will accept that.
As Muslims we should not subject Islam to the whims of the people, if they chose it we implement it, if they don’t we accept the choice of the masses. Our position is that we will implement the rule of Allah on earth by the tip of the sword whether the masses like it or not. We will not subject sharia rule to popularity contests. Rasulullah says: I was sent with the sword until Allah alone is worshiped. That path, the path of Rasulullah, is the path we should follow.
The final problem is that the Muslims’ method is not a method of infiltration. Muslims do not try to infiltrate the system and work from within. It is just not our way. It is the way of the Jews and the munafiqeen but not the way of the Muslims. We are honest and straightforward with friend and foe. We make our intentions open and we declare our dawah publicly, “For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.” We do not want to infiltrate the system whether in America or in a Muslim country. The Jews are the ones who have infiltrated every government they lived under whether it was al-Andalus and the Ottoman khilafah or the Western governments of today. They have a hidden agenda, we don’t. The Jews and their brethren, the hypocrites, tried to infiltrate the government of Rasulullah and were exposed by Quran:
“And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], “Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will return [i.e., abandon their religion]”
So they would become believers and come in to the community only to leave it at the end of the day. Allah also talks about the hypocrites who would sit among the believers and convey what they hear to the Jews.
Therefore for those who say that we should be involved with the system and change it from within are not following the path of the Muslims and if their character is that of a Muslim they would fail because infiltration just doesn’t work with Muslim behavior. But if they do succeed in infiltrating the system then that is proof that their character has become that of the Jews or the hypocrites and not that of the Muslims.
A point related to this is that those who come from Islamic backgrounds and have spent a long time working within the political systems of today end up becoming politicians, with all the negative meanings of the word: deceptive, changing colors, materialistic and Machiavellian in their methods. They may have been bred in the Islamic movements’ strong tarbiyyiah programs but after a while in the political arena they become the wolves they were trying to change. I have seen this with my own eyes happen to people that I know and as one leader of the Islamic movement in Yemen said: “We send them as sheep into a world of wolves only for them to come back to us as an eaten up skeleton.” If you want a live example of what working from within the system produces look no further than Sudan and Turkey. The ruling parties in both countries started out as Islamists only to end up just like everyone else in their rotten and corrupt environments.
Regarding the method of HT which you specifically referred to in your question, I first came in contact with HT members from Jordan in the early nineties and found them to be argumentative but well-mannered and polite. My first understanding of the Hizb was from them and they were core members of the group. HT has played an important role in raising the awareness of the ummah to the matter of khilafa. They also played a role in countering the false idea that politics and political awareness have nothing to do with Islam. However the method of HT to re-establish khilfah is simply not going to work. To wait for nusrah until it arrives is to wait for a miracle. Tribes or military generals that are supposed to give nusrah and establish the religion of Allah are not going to be won over simply by discussions. They will only be won over when they see a group of believers living by what they say and sacrifice all that they own for the sake of Allah. This is what will inspire others to join. The two success stories of powerful people giving nusrah to the religion are some of the former officers of the Iraqi baath regime who joined the insurgency and the former president of Chechnya, Dudayev, who was a high ranking officer in the Soviet army. Both these successful examples of nusra were not won over through debates, demonstrations and pamphlets but by them seeing a living example of men struggling in the path of Allah.
This leads me to the forth method of re-establishing khilafa and that is through Jihad fi sabilillah. The argument that you presented against this is that the only similar situation to our situation now is that of Rasulullah establishing an Islamic state first and then fighting Jihad. You are neglecting a serious difference and that is when Rasulullah established Madina there was no Islamic land that was invaded. Isn’t this a serious and major difference? Today the Muslim world is under occupation and the statements of our scholars are clear that it becomes fardh ayn on every able Muslim to fight to free the Muslim land. When something is fardh ayn it is fardh ayn. You cannot theorize or hypothesize otherwise. The ruling is clear and the implications of it are clear. So even if you do not believe Jihad to be the way to establish khilafah you must agree that Jihad is fardh ayn and that is not where HT stands. Also the jihad which is fardh ayn and is Jihad al dafa (defensive Jihad) does not require the one who wants to participate to seek the permission of the Imam, parents, husband, slave owner, or lender.
Also why should we argue on this point when we see the evidence of it in the real world. The two most successful examples, even though far from perfect, of Islamic rule in this past decade were the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Islamic courts in Somalia. In both countries only these Muslim fighters brought peace, security and rule of law in both countries. Both movements reached to power not through elections or debates but through war. They did not fall because they were failures but they fell because the ummah failed them. However, even though a battle here and there were lost but the war is not over. If you follow the current events and look at them with an attentive eye you would realize that it is the enemy who is bleeding to death not the Muslim fighters. Pretty soon the scales will tip.
Because confusion usually surrounds what is meant by Jihad whether it is the Jihad al Nafs or Jihad of the sword I do not exclusively mean one or the other and I do not exclude one or the other. What I mean by Jihad here is not just picking up a gun and fighting. Jihad is broader than that. What is meant by Jihad in this context is a total effort by the ummah to fight and defeat its enemy. Rasulullah says: Fight the disbelievers with your self, your wealth and your tongues. It is what Clausewitz would refer to as “total war” but with the Islamic rules of engagement. It is a battle in the battlefield and a battle for the hearts and minds of the people.

Here are some compiled bits that can help us overcome fear of people and encourage us to speak the truth when it needs to be said in light of the words of the Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wassallam) in ‘as-Silsilah as-Sahihah’ (168): “A man should not let his intimidation by people prevent him from speaking the truth if he knows it, witnesses it, or hears it.”
Fadlullah al-Jilani said in ‘Fadlillah as-Samad fi Tawdih al-Adab al-Mufrad’ (2/45):
“If it is said that the one who has haya’ is shy to speak the truth, causing him to leave off commanding the good and forbidding the bad, and that his haya’ leads him to shortcomings in fulfilling some obligations, as is normally the case, I say that this is not true haya’. Rather, it is incompetence and weakness and subjugation, and it is referred to as haya’ simply by way of likeness and simile. True haya’ is only when the thing he has haya’ of doing is truly bad, and there is no consideration for what the people consider to be bad when it is in fact something good or vice versa…And it is established that the Prophet had more haya’ than a virgin in the innermost portion of her home, and he is an example for us in this. With this, there was nothing to prevent his anger if the limits of Allah were violated.”
al-Albani mentioned in ‘Adab az-Zifaf’ (p. 129) that Salim bin ‘Abdillah got married and invited people to the wedding, and Abu Ayyub was one of those invited. They had covered the walls of their home with green rugs. Abu Ayyub came and looked around to see the house’s walls covered in green sheets and said: “O ‘Abdullah! You cover the walls with rugs?” Salim’s father replied: “The women have overpowered us, Abu Ayyub!” So, Abu Ayyub said: “You were the last person who I feared would be overpowered by women! I will not eat from your food or enter your homes!” And he left.
(This is because many scholars considered it disliked or even prohibited to cover walls with rugs, considering it to be a form of extravagance.)
In ‘Tarikh Baghdad’ (11/361), it is related that al-Ma’mun was sitting one day with some traders to chat with them regarding some goods they had to sell. Suddenly, he was reminded of some business he had to tend to, and got up to leave. Everyone else in the room got up except for Ibn al-Ja’d, as he stayed where he was sitting. So, al-Ma’mun looked at him in anger and said: “Why didn’t you get up like your friends did?” He replied: “Out of respect for the hadith that was narrated to us from the Prophet.” He asked: “And what is it?” ‘Ali bin al-Ja’d replied: “I heard Mubarak bin Fudalah say that he heard from al-Hasan that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever loves that the people stand up for him should prepare his seat in Hell.”” So, al-Ma’mun stood and pondered over the hadith, then raised his head and said: “Nobody should purchase anything except from this man,” and that day, he sold 30,000 dinars worth of goods.
al-Ghazzali related in ‘Ihya’ ‘Ulum ad-Din’ (5/45) that Hattit az-Zayyat went to al-Hajjaj, and when he entered, al-Hajjaj said to him: “You are Hattit?” He answered: “Yes. Ask me what you want, as I have made a pact with Allah at the Maqam of Ibrahim that I would do three things: i) I will speak the truth if I am asked a question, ii) I will remain patient if I am tested, and iii) I will be thankful if I am spared.” So, al-Hajjaj said to him: “What do you think of me?” Hattit replied: “You are from the enemies of Allah on Earth. You violate honor and kill based on suspicion.” al-Hajjaj then asked him: “What do you say about ‘Abd al-Malik bin Marwan?” Hattit replied: “He is worse than you, and you are simply one of his many mistakes.” al-Hajjaj then ordered that he be tortured, and he was then beaten with sticks and had his flesh stretched out with them until it was torn. His torturers didn’t hear him say anything, and they said to al-Hajjaj: “He is near death!” So, al-Hajjaj said: “Let him go and throw him out into the marketplace.” So, Ja’far (a friend of his) went to Hattit and said: “Hattit, do you want me to get you anything?” He said: “A drink of water.” So, the water was brought to him and he died, and he was only eighteen years old.
adh-Dhahabi related in ‘Siyar A’lam an-Nubala” (9/204) that Abd ar-Rahman bin Rustah asked ‘Abd ar-Rahman bin Mahdi that if a man had just gotten married and was having relations with his wife on the first night, was he allowed to leave off the congregational prayer for a few days? Ibn Mahdi replied: “No, not a single prayer.” Later, Ibn Mahdi himself had a daughter who had just gotten married. So, the morning after the wedding, he made the call to prayer and walked to her door. He told the servant to tell those inside to come out for the prayer. The women and servants all came out startled, saying: “Subhan Allah! What is wrong?!” He said: “I will not leave until you all come out to the prayer.” So, they all came out, and he purposely sent them to a mosque that was out of the way.
In as-Sudays’s biography of Muhammad al-Amin ash-Shinqiti (p. 204-205), it is related that a man backbit someone in ash-Shinqiti’s presence. So, he forbade him from this, and the backbiter said: “I am the one speaking, not you.” So, the Shaykh replied: “I am carrying ‘al-Baqarah’ in my chest. Either politely be quiet or get out.”
adh-Dhahabi also related in ‘as-Siyar’ (7/184) that Sufyan ath-Thawri said: “Whenever I see something that I should speak up about and fail to do so, I urinate blood.”
He also related in ‘as-Siyar’ (7/196) that Shuja’ bin Walid said: “I performed the Hajj with Sufyan, and he would come and go with his tongue never ceasing to command the good and forbid the evil.”
He also related (7/197) that when al-Mahdi come into power, he sent for Sufyan. When Sufyan entered, al-Mahdi removed his ring and threw it at Sufyan and said: “O Aba ‘Abdillah, this is my ring. Work for this nation according to the Qur’an and the Sunnah.” So, Sufyan took the ring and said: “Do you permit me to speak, O Commander of the Believers? Can I speak with your promise not to harm me?” He said: “Yes.” So, Sufyan said: “Do not send for me again until I come to you myself, and do not give me anything unless I ask you for something.” So, al-Mahdi become enraged and wanted to kill him, but his assistant reminded him that he had promised not to harm Sufyan. So, Sufyan was kicked out of the palace and his companions asked him: “What made you refuse? He only asked you to work according to the Qur’an and Sunnah!” So, Sufyan belittled their intellects due to their missing the point and he ran away as a fugitive to al-Basrah.
al-Mahdi later said (7/201): “I was unable to look at Sufyan out of haya’ and intimidation from him.”
He also related (7/199) that Sufyan went to Abu Ja’far when they were at Mina and said to him: “Fear Allah! You are in this position and have this power due to the swords of the Muhajirin and Ansar, and their sons are dying of hunger! ‘Umar made the Hajj and spent only fifteen dinars, and he used to shade himself under the trees!” So, Abu Ja’far said: “Do you want me to be like you?” Sufyan said: “No. Just be below what you are and above what I am.” Abu Ja’far said: “Get out.”
He also related (7/209) that Yahya bin ‘Abd al-Malik bin Abi Ghaybah said: “I never saw anyone with a more confrontational face for the sake of Allah than Sufyan.”
It was also related from Ibn Abi Hatim that there was a blind man who used to sit with Sufyan. When it was Ramadan, the man would go lead the people in prayer, and they would give him clothes and gifts as a reward for this. So, Sufyan said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the people of the Qur’an will come with their Qur’an, and it will be said to the likes of this person: ‘You have already received your reward previously.’” So, the man said to him: “O Aba ‘Abdillah, you say this while I am sitting right next to you?” Sufyan replied: “I fear that it will be said to me on the Day of Resurrection that you were sitting next to me and I did not advise you.”
